After completing the bodice pattern pieces for my garment, I then started working on my skirt front. I began by measuring the width of the waist on the bodice and used that as my waist measurement (image 1). I found creating my own patterns from a block pattern difficult at first to try and understand why I was doing things but by the stage of making the skirt bodice I had begun to really understand the process.
I then measured my fabric width to see how wide I could make my skirt. After doing that I saw I could only go to 140cm to ensure I could fit my pattern pieces onto the fabric (image 3). I then measured the length I wanted my dress and measured to 140cm and joined that to the waist line.
After completing the skirt front pattern, I then created the back pattern by doing the same as what I did for the front and came out the same measurements as the front. I then drew out the pattern pieces but added a seam allowance (image 5) as at this stage in the process I was unsure of whether a needed a zip or not. I don’t think I will need one due to the waist being elasticated but at this stage it is easier to stitch up the seam if it is not needed.
