I started my pattern cutting with a dress block which I slit and spread (image 1) adding 20 cm in each slit to try and create the gathered look I wanted to achieve. After doing this I decided to just work on the neckline (image 2) to try and get the right cowl look. I knew it was going to be difficult to create the right cowl neckline which is why I was planning to try a few different ones before creating the toile.
After doing my pattern piece I then decided to cut out the bodice front (image 3) to see what it would be like on the mannequin. I decided it didn’t work the first time due to the cowl neck was too low (image 3) for the bodice therefore I straightened up the pattern piece to create a higher neckline.
I then cut out a new piece to see if I had created a better look with the cowl neck (image 4). I much preferred this neckline but still wasn’t happy because I felt like there was just slightly too much fabric left in the garment so I decided to alter my pattern to remove about 3 inches from the pattern. I also squared off the pattern to prevent the garment from rising up in the middle and decided to have my pattern pieces as a bodice and a skirt rather than one pattern. I then added two inches to the pattern to bottom of the pattern to allow room for blousing (image 5).
